Brand Tampa

Connecting People In and Around Tampa with Local Awesomeness

Julia Gorzka

What would you like to see us do to make Tampa a better place?

I started Brand Tampa so those of us who want to see Tampa be a better place to live, work and play can find connect and create a loud, unified, grassroots voice that speaks for Tampa.

I look forward to the day I can't remember the last time I heard someone say, "I'm not sure Tampa's ready for this" or "Does Tampa 'get it?'"

When people speak in such generalized terms, who/what are they referring to as "Tampa?" The government? Traditional media? The status quo way of doing things because they've always been done that way?

Tampa is us - the people who live and work here. I want courageous leadership, more positive change and I want to know the other people who are working to make things happen, what they are doing and how we can collaborate to help one another and make Tampa a city where we people say, "Wow, Tampa really gets it!"

I would *love* to see more innovative transportation alternatives. I love they're talking about water taxis. How cool would it be to park my car at a dock in Apollo Beach and ride a boat to work every morning?? A fuel efficient, non-polluting boat... of course. :) I'd catch the sunrise and sunset on the water every day. Awesome.

I think a really great resource we can tap in to is college students. They're fresh, energetic, and want to change the world. Maybe they can help us organize some sort of huge, spontanious gorilla marketing event. Kind of like the massive NYC pillow fight... but not. And have that event draw lots of attention to [insert whatever it is that we want to see happen in tampa] and whoever sponsers the event would give us lots of money to make [insert whatever it is that we want to see happen in tampa] start to happen.

Yeah.

I say you get on that and make it work. But if you hit me with a pillow I'm telling your grandmother.

I'd like to see more conversation and interaction between the business & arts community. We NEED mass transit to make the area more accessible and to get us out of our cars.

PUT - IT - ON!

Create a Tampa Bay Bauhaus.

The German Bauhaus 1919 - 1933 Three key dimensions: ART + DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY
the Black Mountain Bauhaus 1950's

The proposed Tampa Bay BauHAUS would have Five Dimensions:
Art + Design + Technology + SPIRITUALITY + VIRTUALITY - the 5th Dimension...

The Bauhaus would fit Tampa like a glove - all we have to do is BRAND IT
i.e., just PUT-IT-ON

It has been said many times before, but Tampa Bay really must embrace sustainability and 'green' design, and not only through lip service and mayoral car selection. Putting aside the fact that affordable energy has peaked in our nation (and that long-term sustainability is needed to strengthen both the public and government's wallets), Tampa's most sure way of attracting more youth, talent and positive national attention is to thoughtfully and thoroughly embrace energy efficiency.

The city must institute a manditory policy that all new city buildings meet a sustainable level of at least LEED Silver certification, and that all existing buildings must be brought up to that level in a realistic timeframe, perhaps by 2015. The city should be offering significant incentives to both developers who build lower-impact, energy efficient construction, and to citizens who take sustainable measures with their home. Generating the funding to initially support this is a challenge, but it should be a top priority, as this is only an initial capital investment that will return its value to Tampa Bay tenfold. This is the opportunity, today, for our community to set itself apart from so much of the nation and define its identity as a progressive leader.

better mass transit is essential for this city to get to the next level

i feel often times people stay in their corner of the city...i'd love to see a strong bond grown between different groups and kinds of people. let's not only jump out of our bubbles...let's combine them.

Since it looks unanimous on the mass transit topic, I'll go the extra step and say that there needs to be people who step up and actually do it instead of waiting for the government to lay down tracks, build roads, or zone waterways. There's no reason some dudes with a van can drive back and forth between Ybor-Downtown Tampa-Soho and St. Pete's various places (sorry I'm woefully not familiar enough with happenin' places in St. Pete) and charge a few bucks per head. I know there's a market for it since I'm a part of it.

That's just an example though. Once enough people take things into their own hands and even make a few dollars off of it, people will no longer be stuck in the "must drive myself" mentality and rail/ferry type transport will make much more sense to people.

After that it will become apparent, if the people lead the government will follow.

Just to throw it in there, there are woefully few information resources for people who are trying to start a small business. I know they exist but they are near impossible to find and I've decided to better spend my time doing the painstaking research on my own.

Guess it's time to move some of these over the transportation board.

Yep. Want to start the first post? In looking at member profiles a majority of us want to see transit happen.

Care to expound on what you've heard about water taxis over on the transportation board? I'm pretty curious.

I would love to see a transit happen. To be honest, I would like to see a monorail. Monorails are signature to Florida thanks to Disney. (Despite the fact that it's in Kissime/Orlando). The Trolley is a great start. But only if you want to go from Channel side to Ybor to Downtown. A high rise monorail would not only increase the travel ability, but would create jobs, in an economy that (let's face it) is sucking. If Tampa(we) were able to stretch the monorail to reach even the adjoining cities, it would only increase the amount of people who won't have to travel. Throw in a water taxi, with the addition of the current Bus line Tampa could become a very accessible city. Another Large problem is Tampa is not especially walking friendly. Mostly because it has major highways running through it.

I understand the more conservative attitude of our Local Government, but I'm proposing we approach them with a traditional idea with modern technology.

In all honestly who wouldn't want to jet along through Tampa 2 story's high. It's be worth it for about 2$ a ride.

I have to agree with Jeremy. We exist in our self-created silos and those have to be torn down or at least connected somehow. Can you imagine the explosion of creative and community energy if that should happen? it would be fireworks like Tampa has never seen. i'm jazzed by this site and what it can do to bring people together.

Perhaps mass transit would be a more feasible and DOT attractive option if Tampa enjoyed a higher population density. It frankly isn't cost effective to implement mass transit in such a grossly sprawling urban/suburban metropolis. Implementation of progressive property and sales tax schemes encouraging loci of increased density might be a solution to this issue - though long term at best. If the population density is higher, the likelihood of creating a mass transit system that services the highest percentage of population at a reasonable cost would be much more feasible.
