Profile Information

If you live in Tampa Bay, Why are you here?
It's a long story that starts with attending a Hindu wedding in India in the summer of 1997 and ends with seeing abundant opportunities to make a difference in our community.
How long have you lived here?
since the summer of 1998
What neighborhood do you live in, why did you choose it and what do you like about it?
I live where the river meets the bay, on the border of Downtown and Hyde Park in a hi-rise on Bayshore. I moved here from NY and wanted to recreate the experience of living in the city as closely as possible - however here I got not just one bedroom but two and a doorman (back in NY I lived in a 300 sq ft studio). I love being on Bayshore - it's one of the most beautiful streets I've ever seen and I like the location - I'm downtown in minutes and everything else I do is within a 15 minute drive.
If you were to move to a different neighborhood, what would it be and why?
More central downtown or Ybor so I had more places to walk to.
What is your favorite thing about Tampa?
The people, the weather, the water, the history and the opportunity to really make a difference.
What kinds of things are you involved in?
I'm passionate about urban revitalization - livable cities, wide sidewalks, livability, thoughtful placemaking - I could go on and on and on... My background is in the arts and I attend a variety art and cultural events. I enjoy being a part of lots of different things happening in the community. Creative Tampa Bay, Athena Society, Krewe of Venus - Queen Venus XXXVIII. Sunday mornings you can find me singing with the Joyful Praise Ensemble at Hyde Park Methodist.
Tell us about what you do.
I speak on and consult with businesses about brand, marketing and communications strategies. My speciality is digital communications - web strategies, social media integration and new media. Basically I have a lot of fun and have been able to turn my passion for community, storytelling and how to get the word out about not-widely-known stories and happenings into a business. http://www.juliagorzka.com

I founded Brand Tampa and believe we can be a model in community building, civic engagement, citizen empowerment and mobilization to collaborate from the bottom-up and literally brand our city and region for all the awesomeness each of knows individually, but we don't know collectively. I want to put Tampa and our region on the map as one of the most livable, interesting and welcoming places to live in the country. I want a more walkable city, more locally-owned biz and greater awareness of our assets including what we don't have yet because to me that's where opportunities lie and that's what can attract ambitious, bright and energetic people to our city and region. The opportunity to start something.

I describe Tampa as a city where there is tons going on - it's just not obvious. You have to dig to find it. So I've made it my job to make the invisible visible. And the cool thing about this is no one gave me the authority to do it, I just want to make it happen.

Ybor City Stories - an audio tour led by some of Ybor's most infamous ghosts and narrated by James Tokley, poet laureate of the City of Tampa. www.yborcityghostwalk.com
If you live in Tampa, Why do you stay?
It grew on me. Took a long time but now I love Tampa. And I love being near my family. We're neighbors :)
Where else have you lived?
Born in Buffalo, NY
Raised in Northport, NY (Long Island)
New Orleans
Florence, Italy
London, England
Manhattan
What kinds of things are you interested in seeing on Brand Tampa?
Interesting people, ideas and conversations. Citizens collaborating on cool stuff. Inspiration. New places to eat and shop local. A definitive list of Tampa's best make-out spots.

Hi Julia

I'm sorry I didn't see your post.

The guy who is the expert here is Jamie Kenney. I believe he is building more material about Tampa Bay. He is wonderful. http://www.wusf.usf.edu/radio/program/university_beat/episode/2011-04/student_business_summit

Did you go to the huge art fair by the museum? That was great! I'm sure with events like that we can bring a lot of commerce to Tampa. It was the ideal location too, sitting between the two giant buildings and with a pretty view of the river. :-)

RE: Branding Tampa - the brand project that we all need to develop for at least the next five years is:

TAMPA ... the world's 1st airline destination... [1914-2014]

Camelot Florida has developed Flight 2014 as the Centenary Aviation Celebration of the Airline Industry.

FEI - over 700 airline CEO... will be invited to attend their celebration, their contribution past and present - to their industry. This is a five star - five fork event. The core marketing message for Tampa - the hook is

TAMPA ... the world's 1st airline destination... visit www.flight2014.org if interest in getting on-board

I'd like to showcase my art on the net but the only thing that worries me is if someone tries to steal my content. I put watermarks on my pictures using a site called Picmarkr, but I don't know if that's really enough. Do you have any advice? If I knew how to secure them, I'd upload a lot of stuff!

Thanks :-)

Nick

Very sorry for the late reply. I greatly appreciate your concern over my video malfunction. This may be something as simple as an "Embed" technical error. In any case, I am rethinking the process of my marketing campaign. But, thank you! :-)

Hi, Julia and thanks for commenting. The Dog's Bollocks is in Ybor at 7th Avenue and 17th, across from SunTrust Bank. We are currently serving draught and bottled beer with a full liquor menu to follow (this weekend or next week) and a food menu in a few weeks. We have had a few dogs in here, including a precious bulldog puppy, so yeah, we are dog-friendly until the kitchen opens! Stop by and see us sometime.
