Good question. In 2004, I grew tired of living in NYC, where I had lived since June 2001. My plan was to move back to Tampa for about six months, spend time with my family then depart for Seattle or Austin or some other medium-to-big sized city where I wouldn't have to do quite as much schlepping as in New York.
And then I got a job...
How long have you lived here?
1985-1997; since 2004
What neighborhood do you live in, why did you choose it and what do you like about it?
A choice to live at the Grand Central at Kennedy brought me to the Channel District. (Previously, I lived on Davis Islands, in Seminole Heights and South Tampa.)
I enjoy living in the Channel District because I can walk downtown to the library, TBPAC, Tampa Theater, the French place with pain au chocolat, the smoothie store, the YMCA and the Old Tampa Book Company.
If you were to move to a different neighborhood, what would it be and why?
I would move to downtown St. Pete; it's walkable, with restaurants, residences, the Globe, arty stuff, etc.
What is your favorite thing about Tampa?
Probably its size (which also drives me nuts at times)-- it's small enough to get to know people but still big enough to be a city.
What kinds of things are you involved in?
Writing, reading, teaching, art, video production, road biking, swimming, food
Tell us about what you do.
Visual Art Critic for Creative Loafing
Adjunct Faculty at University of Tampa and The Art Institute
Art Blogging Enthusiast for Artsqueeze.com
Freelance Writer & Multimedia Producer
If you live in Tampa, Why do you stay?
I love what I do for a living, and my family lives here. Also, I do-- despite occasionally attesting to the opposite-- believe that Tampa will eventually make the changes required to become livable and, yes, even cool.
Where else have you lived?
Brooklyn/New York, the Berkshires (Massachusetts), NPR, Minneapolis, Hong Kong
What kinds of things are you interested in seeing on Brand Tampa?
Some venue for people to get together on the issue of mass transit.
