Hi! I am looking for a Book Club to join in the Tampa area. The ones I have found so far are either too far away (St. Pete), or have meetings at really inconvenient times (during working hours). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks…
What neighborhood do you live in, why did you choose it and what do you like about it?
I live in the New Tampa area (off Bruce B Downs), and I chose it because a lot of my co-workers recommended it. It's quiet, safe, and has lots of convenient shops nearby. On the otherhand, the traffic is TERRIBLE, and there isn't much in the way of culture or nightlife here.
If you were to move to a different neighborhood, what would it be and why?
I don't know much about the surrounding neighborhoods in Tampa yet, but I would love to move somewhere with more cultural events. I'd also like to be able to hop on a bike and ride to the neighborhood grocery store or to unique shops (non-chain). In New Tampa, you practically have to drive everywhere!
What is your favorite thing about Tampa?
I like the up and coming art scene that's happening in the Ybor City area. I often go to the Saturday Art Walks there and enjoy all of the vendors who sell hand-made jewelry, organic veggies, original artwork...
What kinds of things are you involved in?
I'm a singer/songwriter, and love going to see live original music. I also love to paint, so I try to support local artists any way I can. I'm a member of PETA, World Wildlife Foundation, and Humane Society, so any chance I get to stand up for animal rights, I'll take it! I'm also very interested in India and its culture. I went there for a volunteer trip last year.
Tell us about what you do.
I'm an Application Development Manager (IT) for a large bank. My company moved me to Tampa from Delaware to fill this position and assist with an upcoming project.
If you live in Tampa, Why do you stay?
Primarily, I am staying to fulfill my company's contract...which means I have to be here for a minimum of 2 years. However, I am starting to get used to the area and finding it a little more interesting. I think as I start to meet other people in the area, it will open up more opportunities within the city.
Where else have you lived?
Philadelphia, PA
Wilmington, DE
What kinds of things are you interested in seeing on Brand Tampa?
Book clubs, exercise clubs, art shows, volunteer opportunities, live music events, networking for IT professionals, networking for professional women, opportunities to learn about people from different cultures...

OK. How long did it take me to see this!? Wow! I keep up better on facebook and brand gets neglected. There's a movie this Friday at Cafe Hey near downtown Tampa if you'd like to meet up there. Otherwise Tre Amici in Ybor sometime this wkend would be great. Have you heard of "Water for Elephants" awesome book. Maybe we should set a date/time and post it to those interested and go from there.
Hello there! Did you find a book club? I used to be a language arts teacher and miss the lit. If you're looking for a different place to live try Seminole Heights or Riverside Heights. Its nice here. Please send word to jenniferm.lorenzo@gmail.com about the book club.
Maybe we could meet up at a coffee shop sometime\
Enjoy the rest of the weekend
We are interested in so many of the same things!! I've been in Tampa for two years and it's so hard to meet people. I live in the Carrollwood area and work off of Fletcher and 75. I'm a Business Analyst in the IT department of an insurance company. I totally understand about the New Tampa area not having anything going on. I'm actually considering moving to South Tampa in a couple of months just to be near people. I'm an avid reader, love live music, and enjoy throwing paint on a small canvas board every now and then (I won't fool myself by calling it "painting"). Drop me a note! You seem cool!

India interests - reach out to Kimberly Finn & Sigrid Tidmore. They were part of a Tampa coalition who went India last year. music - you see the threads and a great person to meet is Jessie who started a singers/songwriters night at Tre Amici - one of my fave places to hang out in Tampa. I met Marc there recently and he would be cool to talk to - has a great online radio show and is new from Orlando.
Also, check out the non-profit group - Meg Hendricks is looking for ideas for a fundraiser for CT Spay/Neuter Clinic, a local clinic that provides low cost sterilization for pets of low income households
