Lecture: Noam M. Elcott - Christian Marclay & the Antiquarian Avant-Garde

Today, Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 7pm Noam M. Elcott, who specializes in the history of modern art and media in Europe and North America, with an emphasis on interwar art, photography, and film, will give a lecture. His research and teaching combine close visual analysis with media archaeology and critical theory. He also writes and teaches on contemporary art. Recent classes include Art Humanities, an undergraduate lecture course Art, Media, and the Avant-Garde, and seminars on Dada, on Futurism, and on art between photography and film.

The lecture will be held at at USF FAH290. (FAH290 is located in the School of Art and Art History, adjacent to USFCAM - Second floor, NE corner). The event is free, but seating is limited.

Elcott was educated at Columbia University (B.A. summa cum laude 2000) and Princeton University (Ph.D. 2009). He is the recipient of Fulbright, Mellon, DAAD, and other fellowships.

Elcott is currently at work on two book-length studies. The first charts the rise of cinema and media architecture through close analyses of avant-garde cameraless photographs (photograms) and films, in particular those of Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy.

The second carries this project forward to the present, with extended studies of Anthony McCall, Stan Douglas, James Welling, Christian Marclay, the London Film-Makers’ Co-op, and other contemporary artists. He also curated “Comic – Film – Strips,” a film program and installation at the CUNY Graduate Center James Gallery.

Elcott has lectured widely, including recent and upcoming talks at the Tate Modern (London), the Bauhaus Universität (Weimar), ZKM (Karlsruhe), Light Industry at X-Initiative, Miller Theater at Columbia University, and CUNY Graduate Center (New York).

C. David Frankel stars as Yogi Berra in the tour-de-force about life, family and coming “home.”

The Visual and Performing Arts Series presented by HCC Student Activities is pleased to present in performance C. David Frankel in Tom Lysaght’s Nobody Don’t Like Yogi Thursday and Friday February 4 & 5 at 7:30 pm at the Mainstage Theatre of the Ybor City Campus Performing Arts Building deep in the heart of historic Ybor City. Nobody Don’t Like Yogi is Directed by Steve Mountain.

The Mainstage Theatre is located in the Performing Arts Building of the Ybor City campus of Hillsborough Community College. It is located at the corner of Palm Ave and 14th Street (Avenida Republica de Cuba) in Historic Ybor City.
